What does the School Board do?
As outlined by the ACT Department of Education and Training, the school board is a formal mechanism for parents, carers, staff and students to participate in school decision-making.
Its functions are:
- to establish strategic direction and priorities for the school
- to monitor and review school performance and to report on it to the Director-General, parents of students at the school and staff
- to develop, maintain and review curriculum for the school
- to develop and review education policies at the school
- to establish budgetary policies for the school and approve the school budget
- to establish policies for the efficient and effective use of school assets and the management of financial risk
- to develop relationships between the school and the community and between the school and community organisations
- to make recommendations to the Director-General on issue affecting the school and to give effect to the Director-General’s directions
- to encourage parent participation in their children’s learning; and
- to exercise any other function given to the board under this Act or any other Territory law.
Who is a member of the School Board?
The composition of the school board of Telopea Park School is as follows:
- the principal of the school
- two teachers (the staff members) elected by the staff of the school and appointed by the Director-General
- three parents or other citizens (the parents and citizens members) elected by the parents and citizens association of the school and appointed by the Director-General
- two secondary students (the student members) elected by the students at the school and appointed by the Director-General
- a nominee of the Education and Training Directorate (the appointed member) appointed by the Director-General
- up to three co-opted members (the board appointed members) appointed by the board
- two nominees of the French Government appointed by the Director-General, and
- one nominee of the Australian Minister for Education appointed by the Director-General.
Please note that elected parent representatives serve a 2 year term as a Board member.
